Client

Nornickel is the leader of Russia’s mining and metallurgical industry and the world’s largest producer of high-grade nickel and palladium. The group’s products are supplied to 37 countries worldwide.

Nornickel’s Kola Division in Russia is represented by JSC Kola MMC, the nickel refining center of Nornickel and Murmansk Oblast’s leading copper-nickel sulfide ore mining and non-ferrous metals production facility. The company is located on the Kola Peninsula in Murmansk Oblast.

Project Objective

In 2019, GEFCO Russia won a tender for a one-year contract to deliver Kola MMC’s products to China, Canada and Bulgaria. Products are shipped in containers; shipments are made regularly but vary in volume.

GEFCO Russia’s solution

For the Kola MMC project, GEFCO Russia specialists organized a regular container service — from 1 to 3 container trains with 108 containers per month. The number of trains varied depending on the client’s needs.

The comprehensive service for Kola MMC included rail transportation from Monchegorsk station (Murmansk Oblast) to Avtovo station (St. Petersburg) and organization of sea freight from St. Petersburg to destination ports in Canada, Bulgaria and China.

Results

GEFCO Russia won the tender because it offered the most favorable transportation conditions. Over a period of a year, GEFCO Russia transported more than 2,000 containers with over 50,000 tons of cargo. Of these, 70% of the cargo was delivered to China, 25% to Canada and 5% to Bulgaria.
